Gavin Grochowski is as organized as he is curious. After a short-lived career as a jazz musician, he quickly returned to more analytical pursuits and completed his Masters’s in Data Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC MDS), eager to find impactful stories in data with predictive and descriptive analysis.His appetite for data wrangling (Pandas, Dplyr) and data visualization (Altair, Seaborn, Plotly Dash, GGPlot) in Python and R is unsurprising; it is the natural progression of a lifetime of self-taught systems for tracking his saxophone practice, automating his daily journaling, and refining the boardgames and RPG's that he runs in his downtime. More than that, he is delighted to have reconnected with the same fondness for solving problems with mathematics and machine learning that he had shelved in his youth. Through the UBC MDS program, Gavin developed the statistical foundation to make use of a wide range of Supervised, Semi-Supervised, and Unsupervised Learning models (Scikit-learn, scipy, various R packages), culminating in a capstone project improving the quality of a deep-learning computer vision model (PyTorch, TAO Toolkit, Detectron2). At the same time, his knack for organization and problem-solving led to success in the more technical software development (Git, CI/CD, TDD) and data (SQL, Spark) skills. His interpersonal talents, developed first while running summer camps and teaching music lessons, have been praised as a critical asset in teams he works on and the presentations he gives. Above all, Gavin is eager to make a tangible impact using data in solving real problems in the physical world.
