I have research interests in the pathology of neurotransmitter systems in psychiatric disorders and on the receptor mechanisms of antipsychotic drug action; published over 300 research papers and reviews (Google Scholar Mar 2021: citations=24000; h-index=82). Recent research has included defining selective neuronal deficits in schizophrenia and undertaking pharmacogenetic studies of psychiatric drugs, identifying genetic predictors of weight gain and symptom response following drug treatment. Current research underway at Sheffield Hallam University and with collaborators elsewhere involves epigenetic (DNA methylation) effects in psychiatric disorders, their animal models and in the pharmacogenetics of psychiatric treatments. I also have interests in toxic mechanisms associated with drug dependence.I have productive research collaborations and visiting professor positions with academic research groups in China and Thailand, and have a further research collaboration with Russia. I act occasionally as consultant and lecturer for pharmaceutical companies involved in psychiatric drug development.I was previously President of British Association for Psychopharmacology (2008-2010).Specialties: Mechanisms of CNS drugs, particularly antipsychotic drugs; pharmacogenetics; epigenetics; neurobiology of schizophrenia.
