Teaching JOU 3300, Publication Design

• I am one of the first presenters in this program, which matches Illinois journalists in specific areas of expertise with professionals needing help in those areas. So far I have:
• In fall 2010, presented Photoshop-basics workshops in Watseka and Springfield;
• In summer 2008, created and conducted a full-day regional workshop, "Designing with InDesign," for southern Illinois newspapers at Rend Lake College.
• In early 2008, worked individually on-site with Pekin Daily Times staff on implementing InDesign.

I have participated in this workshop since 2004, helping high-school students from across the state edit, design and produce workshop publications. I also lead classroom sessions in design and editing and play host to students at the Daily News for three-day "mini-internships" during the workshop, helping them develop ideas and produce stories.

I served as editor of this 6,000-circulation PM since 2001. I supervise a seven-member news staff -- directing news coverage and staying involved in day-to-day content editing and design for the Daily News, as well as coordinating news and prepress technology for both the Daily News and its sister publication, the Daily Record in Lawrenceville. I directed.

I taught editing, design and photo concepts, as well as other journalism/publications topics, each semester, and collaborated with the journalism teacher/adviser at CWHS to help students produce an eight- to 12-page tab newspaper. The publication earned 40 awards over five years of the Illinois Journalism Education Association contest, including honors for.

I have conducted workshops in visual storytelling —integrating design, edting and photo editing/composition — including hands-on experiences for students. I have also worked with staff on specific strategies for using InDesign software to achieve design goals for their publications, and worked with a team of student editors to guide a redesign of the.

I served as an editor in various capacities for this group of non-daily community newspapers in east-central Illinois. Duties included design of all CCP publications; supervising, training and mentoring staff; developing story ideas and assigning stories; and developing and carrying out editorial marketing ideas, competitive strategies and customer-service.
