Very simple. We make high quality plays with beginning career actors. We prioritise challenging new writing. We get our shoes on and get out there to engage with audiences who believe that theatre isn't for them and (hopefully) prove them wrong. The plays are good, we can afford to take risks, and we can advance the employability of our actors and other creators while putting challenging and engaging work in front of new audiences. The group holds public workshops and performances, using improv to develop communication, leadership, teamwork, flexibility, resilience, mindfulness... I could go on, and will if you're interested. Improv is fantastically good exercise for the soft skills.

  • Bradford Shakespeare Festival, Bradford Cathedral
    Director
Bradford Shakespeare Festival, Bradford Cathedral Mar 2018 - Jul 2018

Directed a production of Twelfth Night for performance at Bradford Cathedral with a mixed ability cast including industry professionals and first timers. I'm pleased to report we broke box office records, received universally positive feedback, and we've already been invited back next year.

I had a heart attack, a serious one, a full on STEMI. Rushed into hospital by emergency ambulance. Apparently five years ago I would have died, but thanks to some magnificent keyhole surgery invented in Yorkshire, I survived. Unfortunately I was put on lots of drugs and it has played almighty hell with my blood pressure. Which has played almighty hell with my memory and my ability to concentrate. Unfortunately I was put on lots of drugs and it has played almighty hell with my blood pressure. Which has played almighty hell with my memory and my ability to concentrate. There came a day when I was looking at a complex SQL query, thinking "that is astounding. Whoever wrote that is so far beyond me it's just plain embarrassing" and then discovering that I had written it only months before.Radio Design were very patient, they were very kind, but I just couldn't do the job anymore. I still haven't recovered the powers of concentration I had before the attack, and my memory is a subject for family amusement. Do I miss coding? Sometimes, there was a sense of achievement, and I used to be good at it. But if this is the price I pay for not dying then I'm OK with that. Show less
  • Global Eagle Entertainment
    Developer
Global Eagle Entertainment Jul 2014 - Dec 2014
I worked on a comprehensive internal management system, mostly written in Angular.js on a Zend Framework 2 backend, using OOP and TDD principles.
  • Self-Employed
    Software Developer
    Self-Employed Mar 2012 - 2014
Contracts with a range of start-ups, projects and feasibility studies. Mostly in PHP with some Javascript with JQuery and JQueryUI. I created ecommerce solutions; developed original solutions with SVG and ImageMaker; worked with software unfamiliar company owners and entrepreneurs to create cost-effective solutions. I also discovered how expensive it can be, both financially and personally, to get a software product into the market. Fascinating time, very educational.

I studied. Computer Science and Maths. And did various temp jobs to pay for it. Eye opening time. Fascinating really. The view from the bottom of a company is very, very different to the view from the development studio. Or the boardroom. I'm glad I did it. It wasn't easy, but it was extraordinarily educational, and it does mean that over and over again I've sat in development studios and realised that I'm the only person there who has actually ever worked in an office. • Red Ant / Strange Roads Theatre Company

Red Ant / Strange Roads Theatre Company Jun 2002 - Mar 2007
    Liverpool And Touring
I'm hugely proud of the work we did with Red Ant (the name change to Strange Roads would come later as a result of us not doing our homework properly, and that's "we" as in myself and the team. I'm not claiming to be royal), but it paid fourpence a fortnight. So there are lots of temp jobs in there just to keep wolves from doors. I taught, I did the odd IT contract in early versions of PHP and Javascript, and I wrote for websites and small magazines. I taught, I did the odd IT contract in early versions of PHP and Javascript, and I wrote for websites and small magazines. Allow me to tell you the story of interviewing the pop band "Space", which turned into a mammoth drinking session during which we were convinced that we were solving the mysteries of the universe. Except it was all taped, and we ended up with four C90 cassette tapes. Six full hours of tape, with the last one full of blokes just going "blaaaah" at each other. For an hour. The mysteries of the universe were never so mysterious. I had a huge amount of fun, and we did do some remarkable work, but the glamour of poverty wears off. Show less
