Founder And CeoBleep.Com Jan 2003 - Dec 2006London, United KingdomCreation and development of the Bleep.com music download service, launched in January 2004. The world's first DRM free music download service, beating iTunes to the BT Digital Music Awards "Best Music Store" category, in 2006.This was a both an exciting and also quite scary project to work on. At the time, the idea of a selling music downloads without Digital Rights Management (DRM) was unthinkable. For the record label behind this project, Warp Records, their enthusiasm was tempered by a genuine fear that what we might be building something that would put them out of business, as without DRM, we were in effect trusting our customers to not give away the music they had purchased to their friends. However, we felt strongly that the customers were already downloading this music for free from services such as Shazam and torrent sites which were prevalent at the time - and that they used these services precisely because they couldn't legally purchase this music in the high quality, DRM free format they wanted. Within a few hours of what was supposed to be a soft launch, Bleep made it onto Slashdot news and the service became an overnight success. We had disrupted the music space and ultimately paved the way for all other music download services, including iTunes to eventually abandon DRM.Throughout all stages of this project, from original concept development with Greg Eden, through to design and development with Kleber and to the ongoing running of the business, I was surrounded by talented, knowledgeable and very dedicated people - all of whom played a critical part in making this pioneering service a reality.
