I am Geert Thyssen. I am trained as an educationist and in 2009 I have obtained a PhD in educational sciences, specialising in the history of education. From June 2010 to May 2015 I have worked as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Luxembourg. Before coming to Luxembourg I have briefly worked for a project on high school dropout at the University of Maastricht where I have later been given the opportunity to occupy an assistant professor position. At the University of Luxembourg I have first worked on a project comparing from a historical perspective the Luxembourg education system with those of neighbouring countries. In that same period I have also successfully applied for a project of my own and for a structural position at the university. In that position I have later helped to obtain funding for two large-scale projects on social-educational reforms connected to the industry and associated intellectual circles in Luxembourg and its neighbouring countries. In the course of my candidature, licentiate and doctorate in educational sciences at the University of Leuven, more particularly during internships I have acquired expertise in assisting families with educational problems, children with educational and behaviour problems, and people with disabilities. Through voluntary work I have also gathered experience in working with people with disabilities, ex-psychiatric patients, and LGBTQ youth. I am fond of conducting research but also of engaging in teaching and in policy and field work. I have developed strong analytical skills and equally strong communication and people skills. I am flexible, eager to learn, and keen on challenges, whether they present themselves in academia, in the public sector, in the corporate sector, or in the welfare and social work sector.
