About Geert Van Der Sluis
After clinical work experience as Radiotherapy technician (Oslo) as well as Physical therapist (Drachten), I graduated my master Clinical health science at the Utrecht university in 2007.In 2013 I started a PhD trajectory besides my clinical work as a physical therapist. This was a cooperation between Nij Smellinghe Hospital and the University of Maastricht. This gave me the opportunity to combine my scientific research with all the dynamics in daily practice. Main focus of my scientific work and PhD thesis was a transition of perioperative care on the orthopaedic ward of Nij Smellinghe Hospital. After finishing my PhD in 2018 I worked 1,5 year in OLVG hospital in Amsterdam as project leader value based health care. Nowadays I'm program leader in perioperative health care innovations in Nij Smellinghe hospital and I started a professoriate on the same topic at the Hanze University in Groningen on November the 1st 2021.

As physical therapist and embedded scientist I have a special interest in the changing art of clinical care for patients undergoing major surgery, such as total joint replacement (TJR) . State of the art clinical care pathways such as fast track and rapid recovery become more common in daily care regarding TJR, with a decreasing of length of stay and complication rate as an important result. But do we pay enough attention towards patient preferences and the impact of hospitalization and surgery in this innovative care pathways? In my work implementation and research regarding evidence based components of care both in the hospital and outpatient setting have full attention. One have to think about strategies like risk stratification, therapeutic training, monitoring and titration . Main focus of this strategies is optimizing the physical status of our patients around major surgery, in order to maintain participation in daily living during the perioperative period. With this strategy, state of the art medical care becomes complete with state of the art interventions with a focus towards patient preferences and their vital physical functioning.
