Summer of 2021 I had the awesome opportunity to work for Marmon Holdings at their innovation lab in Chicago. The project I (and my fellow intern) was given was to find a solution for a centuries-old problem, automating train car brake coupling. Being in the lab setting was perfect for me and my polytechnic background. I was able to rapidly develop prototypes in the wood shop, cold & hot metal shop, and 3D print new parts. I utilized my skill in Autodesk Inventor & Fusion 360 to develop parts quickly in the printer while I was building or testing something else. I was able to use my schoolwork and personal experience to help try and solve our problems. We used free body diagrams to gauge certain prototype ideas and FMEA analysis on full systems. We used stepper motors and force sensors run off of an Arduino to automate the process.At the end of the project, we began the patent documentation process and had the opportunity to present our ideas and a full demonstration to the executive management team of Marmon.
