In my time working for the RSPB I learnt about the RSPB, the work they carry out both within the UK and globally, key national and regional campaigns and local reserve information and conveyed this information in an appropriate way to a variety of audiences. A big part of what I aimed to do was encourage adults to involve children with the RSPB’s kids club, wildlife explorers, which provides families with activities and magazines to get young people out into the garden and giving their local nature a home. By involving the children in this conversation, as well as showing them some of the hands-on activities they could do themselves at home, I successfully signed up many families to the RSPB. Inlcuding cleaning, feed preparation, creation and provision of environmental enrichment, enclosure maintenance, daily animal observations and assisting vet days. Also learnt and used both protected and non-protected contact animal training techniques. Maintenance of high welfare standards was essential.- Public interaction through tours and presentations- developed an in depth understanding of each of the species, as well as background information on all individual cats at the Sanctuary. This knowledge was combined with up to date facts and data on current conservation issues and efforts to ensure information used in public tours and talks was both educational and interesting. Public interaction was mainly through guided tours of the sanctuary but also included talks and/or presentations to both small and large audiences. It was essential to be able to engage with all ages as guests ranged from primary school groups to corporate tours. In my time at The Big Cat Sanctuary I improved my communication skills and now feel very confident when speaking to the public on current conservation issues. - Management of a small team of volunteers- coordinating a small group of volunteers daily, ensuring husbandry duties were carried out efficiently and correctly.
