About Gemma Stokes
I am highly experienced molecular biology scientist specialising in the design, bioinformatics and verification of real-time PCR assays, in particular assay targeting pathogenic species of bacteria, viruses and parasites as well as the mouse genome. As Head of Bioinformatics at Primer Design, part of the Novacyt Group, I am dedicated to producing high quality qPCR primer and probe designs for our pathogen detection kits with particular focus on veterinary and aquaculture testing solutions for the Research Use Only market and to creating new bespoke kits requested by our customers. Having established a highly effective team, I motivated them to deliver the assay designs and post market surveillance programme of the extremely successful genesig Coronavirus (COVID-19) CE and genesig SARS-CoV-2 Winterplex-CE testing kits, helping to meet a desperate need for quick and easy testing solutions for the SARS-CoV-2 virus and to differentiate this from infections with other common winter viruses, thus helping to fight the advance of COVID-19. In order to meet this demand, I ensured that the team received the necessary training in python programming as well as investing in their personal development.During the past year, I have become proficient in project management skills, qualifying as a Scrum Master and introducing the Sprint style of delivering work packages, ensuring better prediction of delivery timelines and empowering the team to plan and prioritise more effectively. I am currently enrolled on the Leadership in Management course run by the Leadership Trust, which I will graduate from in September 2024.Believing that we can only achieve what we do with a happy, healthy workforce, I also serve the wellbeing of my colleagues, as both a Mental Health First Aider and medical First Aider.
