Working for five years in an ophthalmic surgery has not only given me the chance to broaden my vocabulary with the names of cool-sounding, not-cool eye infections (see Endophthalmitis), but it has also given me the incredible chance to really get to know people. Additionally, a background in heath care and customer service has provided me with the skills to communicate with a wide variety of people with different communication needs.As an Ophthalmic Assistant, some of my tasks include: • Performing preliminary eye function testing with patients.• Assisting with medial audits and professional development tasks.• Explain and communicate with patients about medication and procedures.• Checking in patients and scheduling appointments.• Being in charge of the recruitment of new staff members.As Charlestown Eye Centre is a busy practice, I have become accustomed to a fast-paced environment, which has enabled me to swiftly develop my time management and problem-solving skills.

Not only did I get to make copious amounts of sweet, delicious coffee during my time as a barista, I was also fortunate enough to work in a fun, and positive team environment. Because of this, I was able to quickly build my confidence, and hone in on my time-management and customer service skills. While some professionals might advise against including your first job on your resume, I would tend to disagree. It is because of my first job that I was able to learn one incredibly important lesson: the value of a hard day’s work.
