Profile bio

About Gemma Molinaro

My passion for the ocean, travel and photography has taken me around the world including Switzerland, Egypt, Bahamas, and Fiji and working in the dive/adventure industry as a dive instructor and photographer. To learn more about conserving the oceans I moved back to Australia to study Marine Biology at James Cook University. During this time I worked as the Great Barrier Reef project coordinator for the non-for-profit Reef Check which involved reef monitoring, debris clean-ups and many community engagement projects. Getting involved in the local community, I was the secretary with the Townsville Local Marine Advisory Committee, helping capture stakeholders' views for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. Following my BSc in Marine Biology and Ecology, I continued with an MSc in Protected Areas Management at JCU. While studying I began working with Reef Ecologic working on a number of marine science projects including reef restoration, coral relocation, marine census work, marine assessment for construction and marine education and engagement. Working with a great team of people at Reef Ecologic and spending many hours on the Great Barrier Reef and having an opportunity to spend time working in Papua New Guinea were highlights. I began a position with the Australian Insitute of Marine Science as a project coordinator, working on reef restoration projects based in the Woppabura (Keppel) Islands, working with marine researchers, communicators, traditional custodians and stakeholders to improve reefs into the future. As I continue to learn more skills and work on diverse projects I am still an ocean optimist at heart and continue to look for opportunities to work with great people on research that can help both people and the reef.
