In the more than 20 years I’ve been working as a Design Director with a focus on Footwear and Apparel, I’ve been running teams of designers and bringing the design vision of companies to life. Much like any other lead role, however, there are good ways and bad ways to utilize your power, and how you choose to run your team will make or break you. Additionally, it is critical to understand and stay focused on the company’s strategic direction and business objectives while maintaining expenses within budget.On a personal basis, I have always attempted to be at the epicenter of culture, collaboration, and the business utilizing innovative design concepts to create a vision that will increase brand awareness. Effective design direction requires collaboration with copywriters, sales personnel, graphic & web designers, brand managers, and the marketing team to produce creative content for the products/services being sold.As the poet, John Donne said, "No man is an island, …..” and the ability to maximize the talents of their teams is the epitome of a great Design Director. Doing so means being a coach, a teacher, an instructor, a critic, and yes at times a friend. During that time, I have been involved in several programs that have had a significant and positive impact on earnings and profitability.In this particular role, I was charged with revitalizing their footwear and apparel branding where I was able to contribute $501M in revenue growth to $3.6B business, owning design, market trends, and team-focused creative strategy. One of my most significant contributions was the introduction of the Air Jordan Dior sneakers, an all-leather shoe made in Italy and selling for $2200 a pair. It is of high-quality construction with a limited production of only 8500 pairs. Its appeal has been remarkable and indicative of what creative design and collaboration can accomplish. -
