Done right, editing in an art. Great editing breathes life into stories. It lifts publications above the scrum of copycat, sound-alike journalism, giving them their own unique identity. It gives them their voice.. It’s an art I know well.Over decades, I’ve worked on or written for top publications as diverse as Businessweek, Forbes.com, People, Conde Nast Traveler, the Village Voice and The New York Times. In that time, I learned from the best editors in the business.But what I’m most proud of are the magazines I’ve launched.In1989, as editor, I launched Inside Media, a trade magazine for media planners and buyers at ad agencies, and it quickly shook up the then-sleepy world of media journalism, offering readers independent, incisive coverage. Within months, we put our chief rival out of business. We went on to sweep the trade journalism awards that year. Among the winners: an expose of the mob’s control of magazine distribution in New York City. In 1999, now as editor and publisher, I launched Media Life, also for planners and buyers. The idea was to create a five-day-a-week, online-only news magazine that would compete with and out-report the slew of publications covering the media industry. We succeeded. What set Media Life apart was our unique obsession with putting readers first. Our mission: to provide in-depth reporting that would empower readers to make smarter buying decisions for their clients. It was their magazine, written for them.We trusted that if we won readers’ support, advertising would follow. It did. The magazine ran in the black for nearly 18 years, entirely supported by advertising brought to us by readers. Media Life never hired an ad sales staff. There’s an old saying from the heyday of magazines: Magazines are bought, not sold. It meant that if a magazine had a dedicated readership, advertisers would flock to it; it didn’t need to be sold. Media Life proved just how true that could be for an online magazine as well.
