The main role is to provide 1:1 support for a child with special educational, social, emotional and behaviour difficulties. To ensure that thestudents can integrate as fully as possible in the activities generally undertaken by the otherchildren in the class and make progress.Duties will include running specific programmes and activities to assist the pupils’. Also to be responsible for implementing the targets on thepupils’ Individual Education Plan (IEP) in liaison with the class teachers and the SENCo.

My main responsibility is to be a play-worker for children with mild to severe learning disabilities aged 3-19. I also ensure a safe and supportive environment, which secures the well-being for the children and further establishes their safety and protection from physical and emotional harm. These roles have helped me become more aware of how individuals with learning disabilities cope with everyday life, as well as enhancing my knowledge and skills in dealing with challenging behaviour. Furthermore, it has taught me resilience and provided me with the ability to cope with difficult situations, manage challenging behaviour, develop my knowledge and understanding in working within policies and set protocols.

During my placement year at University, I placed within the child development team as a student psychologist. My supervisor was the head of child development and paediatrics, I was in a team with numerous doctors, nurses and clinical psychologists, all diagnosing and treating neurological disorders, such as autism and ADHD. My roles as a student psychologist consisted of:o Observing clinics with different practitionerso Writing clinic letters, assessment reports, literature reviews and case notes o Creating social stories and visual cues for patients o Making phone calls to families, schools and other clinicianso Scoring psychometric screening tests, ADOS assessmentso Taking meeting minutes during various meetings and attending meetingso Making the list for the monthly multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting and attending o Attending school observations o Running my own 1-1 clinics with patients who were diagnosed with anxiety, depression and anger issues
