About Gene Gemperline
In my job, you do a lot of talking to people, users. A lot of watching them work. You have to when you're designing something they'll use every day. For years maybe. Can you imagine using the same piece of software for years? The things you get used to? The workarounds so well-worn they've become standard protocol? Anyway, you see where they get tripped up, frustrated. Where it takes them twenty minutes to do something that should take two. They might not see it, of course - because they've acclimated to it - but you see it, the opportunity. And you smile because you know there's something you can look into there, something to be improved. You research more. Get deeper into the problem. You try out a few things. Test them. Try a few more. You show those things to people that have never even used the tool! What will they do!? And then finally after all the iterating, it's built. It's tested. You send it out. It's live. Countless people just saved 18 minutes a day. Per how many business days in a year? How many years? A few of them send you a Slack message a'la: "OMG I can't believe it didn't work like this in the first place this is so much easier." And you feel pretty pleased, and, really, just happy to have made a difference in someone's daily routine. And then you get back to work.

Content Authoring ToolLead the design for Jellyvision’s proprietary internal content authoring tool, which is used by creative and production staff to create, customize and manage Jellyvision’s flagship SaaS product: ALEX Benefits Counselor, a media-rich, responsive decision support tool with over 1,000 enterprise implementations for over 8 million users. From concept to first release took 18 months. Benefits Configuration Tool Lead the redesign of Jellyvision’s proprietary benefits configuration tool, which is used by implementation staff, customers, and brokers to input unique benefits information such as health insurance and retirement plan details. More than 1,000 instances of ALEX Benefits Counselor were configured using this tool, with each configuration consisting of thousands of editable fields. Added new workflow, history viewing and customer review and commenting features.Analytics DashboardLead the redesign of Jellyvision’s customer-facing analytics dashboard. Used by HR professionals as well as internal Account Managers to view statistics and glean insights about who’s using their ALEX products, how they’re using them, and what they’re saying about them.
