Sometimes, this has required deep immersion in new sectors, technologies, businesses, or industries to ensure both competence and creative excellence, similar to acquiring fluency in an unfamiliar language. While this level of immersion is not always necessary, it is good to know what it takes.As intellectual property counsel, I specialize in patent and copyright strategy, tactics, and execution. I have defined and initiated entire programs, built in-house and outside counsel teams, negotiated and closed industry-changing license deals, and developed and monetized industry-leading patent portfolios.My involvement with the music industry has been an interesting side gig. I started as the AGC of the original Napster in 2000, witnessing how it disrupted the music industry and discovered the power of the Internet's viral network effects. Later, I became the VP of Global Digital Business at a major record label, dealing with the aftermath and trying to make sense of the music industry's relationship with its Death Star: Google/YouTube.
