With more than two decades of experience spanning entrepreneurship, Fortune 50, and startup, Gene Sawyer has built a career influencing organizations to mature their understanding and application of technology to solve complex healthcare challenges.Having spent the past several years as Chief Information Officer, leading IT organizations supporting value-based care models at Optum and high growth healthcare startups, Gene brings a unique perspective to clinical operating model transformation and the capabilities necessary to support capitated contracts and whole person care. As comfortable driving strategic planning in a boardroom as he is hands-on with solutioning, Gene builds trust and rapport at all levels of an organization with a deep understanding of technical and non-technical aspects of healthcare in the United States.Prior to Gene’s executive leadership roles, he served as Chief Architect for OptumCare, where he led multi-year strategic planning, vendor selection, portfolio rationalization, and digital innovation across 26 care delivery organizations. During his tenure, Gene played critical roles in Optum’s $5B acquisition of DaVita Medical Group and several healthtech companies, liaising with the Federal Trade Commission as well as corporate development teams across multiple organizations.Gene began his career focused on healthcare interoperability, founding and managing a multi-disciplinary consultancy, where he had the opportunity to work with some of the US's largest provider and payor systems. Over the course of 15 years, Gene consulted around topics of systems integration, eMR implementation, population health analytics, digital engagement, business continuity, and governance.Passionate about changing care delivery, Gene enjoys collaborating with clinicians and operators to address inefficiency, improve patient outcomes and experience, and decrease the burden of practicing medicine through technology.
