Gene Shapiro has been President of Shapiro Auctions since 2007. He is a Board Director and Certified Member of the American Appraisers Association. Prior to founding Shapiro Auctions, Gene started his career in the Contemporary department at Sotheby's, New York before working as a private art dealer specializing in European, American, and Russian artworks. Gene is a paintings appraiser on Public Television's Antiques Roadshow, which is seen by by more than 9 million television viewers each week (view videos of Gene's appraisals here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/appraisers/gene-shapiro.) In addition, Gene has appeared on the BBC World News and Al Jazeera America news programs as a commentator on the art market. Gene is frequently called upon by collectors, dealers, and governmental organizations for consultations and appraisals of art, and has lectured on the art market extensively. A licensed auctioneer, he is the main auctioneer for Shapiro Auctions, and has happily provided his auctioneering services for charitable organizations such as the St. Huberts Animal Welfare Center Charity Fundraiser, the Celiac Benefit Gala for the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University, and the Centro de Kabbalah Mexico at the Museo Casa de la Bola in Mexico City. Gene received his BA in art history from the University of Pennsylvania, and has studied art history at the University of California, Berkeley and Christie's, New York. Gene speaks English, Russian, French, and Spanish fluently. He lives in Westchester County, New York.
