About Genesis Lindstrom
Ever since I was a young girl I've been fascinated by how society works and how the public health system works (I aspired to become a doctor, my dolls had casts made out of paper rolls and were injected with water if they 'got sick'). I was privileged enough to reap the benefits of private health care while living in South America, and as a young teen I was already aware of the huge discrepancies between the private and public sector. After migrating to Australia, I developed a fierce passion for youth mental health (having experienced mental ill-health myself and seeing it so present in my community). I started to gain some knowledge through workshops with headspace and VCE subjects as well as independent reading and learning outside of school. As a VCE student, I was the leader of the student wellbeing group. As an undergraduate psychology student, I did an internship at Orygen and later became a member of a youth advocacy group at my local headspace. Here was when my passion for youth mental health/public health became the driving factor in my career. I've had the honour of participating in countless workshops, co-design sessions and other programs where I was able to deliver health promotion to other young people, work alongside health professionals to design new programs, and use my voice to guide the direction of youth organisations. By using my lived-experience of anxiety and depression, I was contributing to the changes that needed to be made in the sector! I was also using my voice to communicate with other young people that 'it gets better' and 'your experience of mental ill-health doesn't define you'.Following my Master of Public Health, my interests grew to include academic research. I completed a dissertation on exploring how the role of lived-experience speakers shapes individual wellbeing. Now I am fearlessly pursuing a career in public health/youth mental health where I can leverage on the 8 years of experience I have in the field to make a valuable contribution to the sector, and continue to create the change I want to see in my community. #mentalhealth #fearlesspursuit #livedexperience #passion #career #immigrant #speaker
