About Genevieve L Evans
My general desire is to understand how biology works from the protein perspective, with a research focus on structure-based drug design. I am currently working at the PDBe as a PDB annotator. For 2.5 years, I worked on ion channels (KU Leuven). These fascinating membrane proteins are "molecular electrical switches" involved in cardiac & neurological processes. Previously, I investigated enzymes from bacteria that were potential drug targets for tuberculosis (University of Auckland; University of Canterbury) and gonorrhea (University of Western Australia). I love finding connections between the various perspectives/ideas that come from different types of science. I like to support interpersonal connections with/between others because I believe that everyone has things they can share that you can learn from.My collaborations with synthetic chemists have been aided by my background in chemistry (i.e. undergraduate study). Working with chemists in a research context has greatly broaden my perspectives on drug design. My research experience in Auckland aides me in collaborations with microbiologists. During this time, I had valuable conversations with microbiologists (e.g. Dr Stephanie Dawes, Dr James Dalton, and Prof Siouxsie Wiles) that expanded my "microbiology" perspective. As part of this learning process, I tested in cell-based assays (with different Mycobacterial species) various inhibitors that I had developed using approaches that involved a purified protein target. For 2 years, I worked with Prof Alice Vrielink, at UWA, on a drug target for Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis. My “microbiology” perspective was further grown through Prof Vrielink’s ongoing collaborations with Prof Charlene Kahler. This work was my introduction to the challenges associated with pursuing science that involves membrane proteins and detergents.During my time working with Prof Ted Baker and Assoc Prof Shaun Lott at the University of Auckland, I characterized several series of inhibitors for enzymes from Mycobacterium tuberculosis using various biochemical assays. This lab and multiple visits to the Australian Synchrotron provided a rich environment to grow as a structural biologist -- which I did. I am very grateful to have been exposed to many aspects of protein crystallization and X-ray crystallography. I determined multiple protein:ligand structures and incorporated these results, as well as computer-based modelling techniques, to provide direction for the iterative process of inhibitor design.
Listed skills include Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, X Ray Crystallography, Drug Design, and 11 others.
