I am a legal academic expert in AI, digital regulation and EU law. I am also a qualified lawyer at the Italian Bar Association (not registered) and have gained legal experience at the Court of Justice of the European Union (Luxembourg) and at Clifford Chance (Milan). I have co-edited four books and authored more than 30 peer-reviewed publications appeared in renowned journals and volumes. My academic work was cited by courts such the European Court of Justice and the Slovenian Constitutional Court, and has influenced policy developments and discussions at institutions such the UK Parliament, the European Commission, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission, the European Central Bank, and the German Parliament. I acted as member of the EDPB Stakeholder group on AI model, and I was appointed by invitation as member of the Global Initiative for Digital Empowerment and the UNESCO Consultation Committee on the adoption of guidelines on AI and courts, and as Research Co-Director on AI at the Centre for Digital Constitutionalism and Policy. My work on data protection and AI regulation featured in outlets such as the Associated Press, the Economist, Nathalie Nahai’s podcast, Faculti, and DevNews. I was awarded three grants from the European Commission to conduct research projects on the intersection between the rule of law and digitisation. I have actively provided my legal expertise for policy developments in the area of digital regulation. Among others, I co-authored two reports on e-voting and disability rights for the EU Commission, contributed to the drafting of the UNESCO Guidelines on AI Systems in courts, offered expert evidence and legal training on digital regulation to UK and international institutions (eg European Network of Human Rights Institutions, the UK Parliament, the Law Society of Northern Ireland), and supported various NGOs working in the area of digital rights (eg Digital Freedom Fund, Privacy International). I am a frequent public speaker, having presented my research nationally and internationally at prestigious Universities (eg University of Oxford, Leiden University) and before national and European regulators, (eg Members of the House of Commons and of the House of Lords, European Network of National Human Rights Institutions) at more than 80 events.
