I was apparently Canva's first specialist IT risk & compliance hire, and I have had to spend quite a bit of time explaining to people that I'm not actually a security engineer ("Sorry, I can't grant you permissions. Can I offer you any risk advice? No, I really can't give you permissions - I don't even have a login!"). I joined Canva just as the effort to achieve ISO 27001 compliance was gathering steam, and I was intimately involved in putting together some of the key pieces and in the (successful) initial certification audit itself.I'm currently responsible for a team that runs Canva's information security management system (ISMS), provides general IT risk and compliance advice to teams, performs vendor risk assessments, and co-ordinates internal and external audits. I'm also involved in reviewing design documents, security questionnaires, security provisions in contracts, and a whole heap of other things.

I joined Tyro when it was very much in its infancy, and have played my own small part in growing it into what it is today. I was a software engineer for several years, then a software team lead for a couple more. I moved into an engineering lead role, also spent some time as a (joint) Head of Engineering, then reinvented myself as an IT risk manager.As an engineer, I was a domain specialist in the real-time transactional parts of the payments acquiring system, being involved in and overseeing many projects relating to card payment capabilities, interchange links, and point-of-sale integrations. In doing so, I've worked with innumerable open-source technologies, including Spring, Hibernate and jPOS.In my engineering leadership roles, I was responsible (with my fellow leads) for the rapid growth of the Tyro engineering team between 2012 and 2016, where we successfully grew the team from around 25 to over 150. I have also been responsible for/involved in a myriad of other things, including management of engineering risk, research and development grant submissions, and presentation of updates to the Board of Directors.In late 2017, I moved from the Engineering team to the Risk and Compliance team to take up new responsibilities in IT risk assurance. I was heavily involved in Tyro's consultations with APRA as Tyro started moving into the cloud.

I was part of a small team responsible for development and maintenance of the an application that was used for tracking information about ASX participants. Probably my most impactful achievement in the relatively short time that I was there was to map out and start implementation of a migration path from the existing proprietary Servlet-based framework to a Spring/iBatis system, which increased the productivity of the developers working on it, and improved the understandability and maintainability of the application.
