The role involved the continuous appraisal and development of an emergency service to meet new and emerging challenges required the management of resources to be flexible and effective, ensuring the best possible outcomes.The role also required the development of effective and ethical performance management arrangements to support and continuously improve the policing service provide to communities through neighbourhood policing, emergency response, custody and investigation activity.Further responsibilities included supporting, challenging and guiding territorial commanders; ensuring the development of efficient and effective responses to meet uncertain demand in a complex operational environment; managing and mitigating the risks in delivering a policing service to a population of 2.3 million.Working at the board level, it was vital to develop effective partnership arrangements and relationships with key groups and individuals including Chief Executives of Local Authorities, the Health Service, Commissioning Groups, Criminal Justice agencies and others to deliver partnership responses to enduring community and crime issues.Other responsibilities involved commanding operations including strategic command of firearms deployment, public order and community cohesion.
