I've been in IT at Nottingham City Council now for 38 years, and in that time have worked on pretty much everything bar programming. I've been a Mainframe Operator/Shift Leader, worked on distributed systems, comms and networking, PC's (Windows - all flavours), Unix, Samba, Novell, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2012, MS Exchange, VMWare, SAN technologies, switches, routers, Call Manager systems - I've had a play with pretty much the lot. The job I have now entails the management of "Minor Projects" - so the IT aspects of moving of staff from one location to another or the opening of a new office. I always take a level-headed approach to any project I'm working on - it's easy to get lost in detail and complication - but a clear view of what's needed will always prevail. I think that the most crucial element in any piece of work is the people working on it. Technology does not complete a project - people do. Get the right people on board, give them a clear idea of what's needed, get them engaged, roll up your sleeves and prepare to get your hands dirty yourself - and there you have it!
