About Geoff Newiss

I am an experienced policy and research professional and HE lecturer specialising in policing, crime, criminology, missing persons and child abduction. Having worked in central government, national charities and academia I have a broad range of skills and experience serving diverse customers/beneficiaries. Social researchI have excellent quantitative and qualitative social research skills. 9 peer-reviewed academic journal papers (5 lead/single author), and 20+ research reports published by Home Office, National Crime Agency, charities etc. Subjects including police legitimacy, police wellbeing, policing missing persons, child abduction, child safety etc. Proficient in SPSS, NVivo, MS Office. Considerable experience as lead researcher including design, data collection, analysis, report writing; and research management, including programme delivery, stakeholder engagement, partnership building, commissioning and staff/volunteer development. Awarded NCA commendation for quality of research on UK child abduction problem profile (2013). I completed my doctorate (by publication) on the topic of fatal missing persons in 2023. HE LecturerIn my current role I am module lead for Evidence-Based Policing modules (Levels 4 and 5) and End Point Assessment Professional Policing Practice Project (Level 6) for the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA). Responsible for delivering e-learning, in person classes, one-to-one student support, final year supervision, assessment and administration. Good understanding and application of curriculum design and pedagogy including constructive alignment, scaffolding, principles of effective feedback, teaching for diverse audiences. Policy and campaignsAs Director of Policy and Research at the UK charity Missing People, I designed and led the families of missing people rights campaign, including securing legislative change working with government officials, parliamentarians, lawyers, service users (Presumption of Death Act, 2013). I am a (volunteer) Director (Research and Development lead) of the UK charity Action Against Abduction. I led the development of the new "Clever Never Goes" child safety campaign which has been downloaded by over 3,000 schools to date. Secured a partnership with Metropolitan Police Service to deliver Clever Never Goes force-wide. My work was featured on the BBC People Fixing The World series ('brilliant solutions to the world's problems'). Good knowledge and application of principles of user-research including contextual usability testing, pre/post measures, user surveys and moderation.

    Leading the UK charity Action Against Abduction with the primary focus to develop and deliver the new child safety campaign "Clever Never Goes", to replace 'stranger danger'. Responsible for ensuring user-centred design, I have worked alongside users (teachers, police etc.) throughout the design cycle, including initial context of use/interaction scenarios, concept ideation and validation/evaluation, including contextual enquiry and online surveys. Much of my role involves forging partnerships with local authorities, police and other providers to promote the use of Clever Never Goes. I'm responsible for the strategic direction of the charity and for building the knowledge base about child abduction. Author of the 2013 report "Taken" (a problem profile of child abduction in the UK); "Beyond Stranger Danger" (2014, a review of the evidence of the (in-)effectiveness of 'stranger danger'), and annual FOI reports on police-recorded offences of child abduction and kidnapping.
