Geoff Mroz work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Finite Element Analysis Specialist / Test Engineer
Expertise in Finite Element Analysis, including static analysis for military vehicles and shelters, and explicit dynamics analysis for mine blasts. Expertise in testing to military and other standards. * Worked with Department of National Defence (DND) to improve survivability of Tracked Light Armoured Vehicle (TLAV) floor when subjected to mine blast.* Utilized Finite Element Analysis to verify safety of numerous shelters and mechanical designs, including solar skid, jib crane, and MSVS (Medium Support Vehicle System) SEV (Special Equipment Vehicle) shelters. Provided recommendations to increase strength and reduce material.
Mechanical Engineer
Responsible for installation of new assembly line equipment in the Oshawa Flex Plant.* Successfully led multiple groups during new equipment installation in 3 major areas of Bodyshop: Underbody, Framing, and Closures.* Redesigned numerous pieces of assembly line equipment to meet specific build requirements.
Process, Design, Construction, Integration Engineer
Lead Engineer for Chevrolet Camaro and Buick Regal Door Assembly Line Processes. Involved with cost estimating, system layout development, equipment selection and design, part locating methods, operator efficiency, ergonomics, and lean manufacturing. Followed assembly line processes through full program lifecycles.* Worked with Core Processing group in Warren, Michigan to develop new common BOE (Bill of Equipment) Door Assembly Line process. Designed current Camaro door inner assembly line process. Utilized combo robots and designed cell layout with linear operator stations, resulting in better robot utilization, lower investment, reduced floor space, and improved operator efficiency. Savings in robot investment was approximately $180K.* Designed and supervised installation of part ejector in Camaro door offline sub station to reduce operator time. This eliminated need for one additional operator, at cost savings of approximately $100K per year.* Reduced number of geo set welding stations from 5 to 3 for Buick Regal door inner process. This reduced operator walk distance and allowed one operator to run front and rear door inner processes, saving 1 operator per side for cost savings of approximately $200K per year.* Led processing and design shops in Michigan area on tooling and equipment design.* Worked with Weld Tool Centre in Grand Blank, Michigan during tool construction and integration to ensure proper build of tools and setup of assembly line.* Supervised Maintenance, Production, and Construction groups in Oshawa during launch of Camaro to ensure project completed on time and under budget.
Manufacturing Engineer – Car Body Assembly Plant
Lead Engineer for Buick Allure and Pontiac Grand Prix Door Assembly Line Processes. Involved with trouble-shooting of robotics, welding, hemming, and other assembly processes. Regularly worked on continuous quality improvement issues including fit and finish.* Purchased and installed high-speed electric guns with torque monitoring capability. Ran trials to trouble-shoot overheating problem, and successfully implemented new grease to eliminate problem.* Implemented various improvements to process equipment for error proofing and to improve efficiency.* Supervised groups of up to 10 Tool Makers, Millwrights, Welders, Electricians, and other trades people during construction and continuous improvement projects.
M.Sc. Research - Robotics Design Project
Mechanical Design and Analysis of 4 degree of freedom cable-actuated robot for excavating in outer space. Project based on specifications provided by MD Robotics. Built working prototype for future research in Robotics Lab.* Initial project involved producing detailed design and performing stress analysis on an existing cable-actuated robot. Through research and analysis, developed new, simpler mechanism that reduced number of links and joints.* Performed force, stress, stiffness, and stability analysis using finite element method and classic calculations, conducted simulation and workspace analysis with NASTRAN, and designed all parts of robot using CAD. Selected motors, sensors, transmission elements, and all other components for prototype. Worked with machinists during prototype build to ensure proper assembly and function.
Manufacturing Engineer
Full time manufacturing engineering position for 16 months. * Saved company costs by designing many pieces of new equipment in house, including pag oil fixture, leak test fixture, and part packaging.* Supervised the design and fabrication of an automation welder. Cost savings achieve by refurbishing numerous components from existing welder.* Regularly worked with production workers on prototype builds, and assisted with assembly line changeovers.
