Responsible for managing research and development work of computer models for material behaviour. This includes setting the direction of the work, delegating tasks, communicating with staff members and other teams, managing a budget, identifying short and long term goals, monitoring the team’s progress, and making adjustments when needed due to changes in resources and developments. During my time as a defence contractor, I have gained a breadth of experience in scientific research and computer programming. My main activities at work have included developing scientific software, optimising models to achieve maximum agreement with large datasets, designing experiments to validate theoretical models, providing software quality assurance for an important theoretical physics code with over 100 users, writing technical reports, and giving presentations to both peers in academia and to customers. I have been required to work largely independently, in a team to achieve a common goal. I've had work published describing the use of swarm intelligence to fit a complex computer model to experimental data (Cox and Christie 2015 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 27 405201). This task required extensive knowledge not just of the underpinning physics but also of Fortran and Python computing languages.Since joining the defence laboratory in 2003 I have become a technical lead in the field of shock physics and material modelling and in 2009 and 2017 I was an invited speaker at the main conference in this area. I believe that the skills I have developed during my time would be largely transferable to other areas.In addition to my technical competencies, I have also developed many of my soft skills such as aiding the running of internal conferences and I have also been pro-active in setting up processes for knowledge capture.
