    Being a soccer referee is one of the most valuable job experiences I ever had, and one of the toughest. The reason might be surprising – refereeing is terrifying.The first time I stepped out on the field, I wanted to run away: far, far away from the players and especially the adults. The parents, many of whom are cultured professionals practicing law and medicine, suddenly take leave of their facilities when they line the sideline. They do not see a kid who happens to be a referee. They see an enemy whose decisions directly affect what they desperately want. When refereeing, I was under strict scrutiny by often well meaning but uninformed parents, competitive players and coaches, and die-hard fans. A good example is the fact there is no rule against the ball touching the hand of a player who is not the goalie inside their own 18 yard box. Please google it – handling the ball intentionally is illegal; mere contact of the ball with a player’s hand is not in and of itself a violation of the laws of the game. Yet every game from so many 'expert' fans, I'd hear 'handball ref, you blind?'.I loved refereeing and often think of going back – for now I volunteer as coach and convenor. I learned about the difference between following the rules and exercising judgement, authority, and how to take command.I became part of a group larger than myself, and was able to learn from the wisdom of others who came before me at a young age. In addition, it kept me physically fit, and able to have experiences I wouldn't have had otherwise (like changing in the visitor's locker room at what was then SkyDome, and officiating on that field or participating in the Robbie Tournament, where I saw exceptional talent up close and personal). Most of all I learned about the need for grace under pressure, and how to handle stress in a productive manner, all while young.
