As the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff to the Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), the city’s only public R1 university, significant contributions are made to the promotion and safeguarding of research. UIC’s research portfolio, exceeding half a billion dollars in FY23, is a testament to this. Key tasks include streamlining operations and ensuring efficient processes within a research environment. This involves the establishment of procedures for priority setting and decision-making, ensuring high-priority initiatives receive due attention. Identifying and addressing potential obstacles to progress is also part of the responsibilities. Regular collaboration with executives and team members is undertaken to develop and report on key goals and initiatives, aligning them with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) strategic framework. By connecting teams working on similar initiatives, a culture of collaboration and synergy across different functional areas is fostered. Management of ad-hoc projects on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, including proposal development and post-award activities for large, multidisciplinary grants, is also a key function of this role. OVCR encompasses several functional areas, including research development, sponsored programs, human and animal research subjects compliance, research integrity, and research data security.

As the Chief of Staff, I provided strategic advice and counsel to the President/CEO, acting as a bridge between executive leadership and diverse stakeholders, including Trustees, grantees and community members. I managed communications from the President's Office, including presentations and speeches and oversaw a $20 million grant portfolio, ensuring both pre- and post-award processes ran seamlessly. I produced reports and dashboards highlighting key metrics for executive leadership and the Board of Trustees and partnered with program managers to create efficient processes for monitoring and responding to requests from grantees.
