About Geoffrey Otim
Geoffrey Otim is a seasoned life scientist with a strong interest in synthetic biology, biosecurity, pandemic preparedness, and biomanufacturing. With over 8 years at the WHO Polio and Measles Regional Reference Laboratory Network in Uganda, Geoffrey has demonstrated expertise in scientific research, disease surveillance, and outbreak response for vaccine-preventable diseases and emerging infectious diseases (EID). During his master's program at Université Paris Cité, he joined Dr. Vincent Libis's lab at the Learning Planet Institute, where he worked on discovering cryptic microbial secondary metabolites through heterologous gene expression. Currently, he works as a Research Associate in the synthetic biology for clinical and technological innovation (SynCTI) program at the National University of Singapore under Prof. Matthew Chang. His work focuses on engineering gut microbiome for therapeutic applications. As a leading voice in the synthetic biology ecosystem in Africa, Geoffrey founded the first iGEM team from East Africa in 2018, organized the first international synthetic biology and biosecurity conference in Africa, and led the first stakeholder-focused pandemic preparedness initiative in Africa (SynBio Africa Global Catastrophic Biological Risks Initiative). He has received several awards, fellowships, and invitations to attend and speak at international conferences, including OECD Conference, UNODA-BWC conferences, SynBioBeta Conference, EBRC Global forum, ACS Publications symposium, the World Plastics Summit, the UN Convention on Biodiversity, and the Global Health Security conferences. Recognized for his exceptional contributions, Geoffrey received SynBioBeta Impact Award in 2023 for his pioneering efforts in building the synthetic biology community in Africa. Geoffrey holds an MSc in Life Science from Université Paris Cité, a BSc in Medical Laboratory Science from Mbarara University, an Advanced Diploma in Health Management and Leadership from the Uganda Institute of Allied Health and Management Sciences, and a Master in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the Universite Oberta de Catalunya/UNITAR. He also completed professional development courses in synthetic biology from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York, and science policy & advocacy for STEM scientists from the University of California, Irvine.His research interests encompass synthetic cells, discovery of cryptic microbial secondary metabolites through synthetic biology, engineering gut microbiome for therapeutic applications, and gas fermentation for biofuel production.
