Most of Rand Water’s key strategies in the past 10 years have been directly dependent on effective Human Resource strategies and initiatives, and these have been led by the General Manager – Strategic Human Capital. HR in Rand Water has been highly strategic in its focus and approach, requiring all its strategies, programmes and activities to contribute positively achievement of business objectives. Significant accomplishments include achievement of a strongly participative, performance-orientated corporate culture; a turnaround from a negative employer image to that of preferred employer; a full reversal of previously conflictual labour relations; marked accomplishment of employment equity objectives; achievement of a learning culture through an integrated company-wide human resource development process directed towards strategically-required competencies; industry leadership in the management of HIV/AIDS in the workplace; etc.

The Group Human Resources Director was responsible to the Executive Chairman for all aspects of the effective employment and utilisation of people to achieve business goals. Human resources strategies focused on Tek’s need to become internationally competitive whilst also adapting to the socio-political changes in South Africa. Achievements included: Implementing a formal performance management process. Initiating an integrated management development structure to upgrade management skills, create a culture of learning and improvement, complement succession planning, and complement the affirmative action strategy. Furthering the Company’s relations with trade unions towards a more productive relationship where international competitiveness was an accepted joint agenda item. Making significant advances in transforming the corporate culture to match the needs of an internationally competitive business.
