Student Project
During my final semester at UVA, I had the pleasure of working with a team of students under the guidance of Brooks H. Pate, PhD on a semester-long project. We used current and developing spectroscopic techniques and integrated them with emerging data analysis technology to build a faster, low-interaction spectroscopic device. Combining data utilized data from rotational and mass spectrometers, alongside a machine learning algorithm which we trained using imported x-crystallography databases, we determined the full 3-D structure of an unknown organic substance with reasonable certainty.
Research Chemist
The Landers research group works on the cutting edge of the intersection of microfluidics and analytical chemistry. My research explored expansion of the capabilities of multilayer microfluidicmicro devices to allow for multiple simultaneous, and independent, operations to occur on the same device so as to increase both multiplexing capabilities, and the number of parallel tests for statistical purposes. In addition, my recent work has focused on making these devices fully independent of external power sources by incorporating capillary capabilities into the devices internal architecture.
Head Of S.P.A.C.E.
The Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS) Contracted Independent Organization is composed of several different project groups who's goals are oriented towards the exploration and/or development of space. During my third year at the University of Virginia I proposed and was approved to start a new research/project team Sustainable Procurement and Application of Celestial Entities (SPACE). The groups mission statement is to research and develop technologies for using raw materials from planets/space such as asteroid mining or regolith use, and reusing materials that are brought off of earth. SPACE is currently working on 3D-printed photo bioreactors for growing algae on Mars. By using the thin but CO2 rich atmosphere, water, and re-purposing inorganic/nitrogen bound compounds already present on the Martian surface we think that algae cultures could be grown indefinitely.
