Upon completing my PhD, I began a postdoctoral research position at the University of Liverpool. This post has enabled me to further the skills acquired throughout my PhD course in materials science, chemistry and microbiology and apply them in order to design and test novel, antibacterial materials for use in a variety of applications. Current projects include: the development of heparin-functionalised gelatin hydrogels, which initial tests have shown to be bactericidal; the modification of water filters through covalent attachment of a bactericidal quaternary ammonium compound for use as a cheap method for water purification in rural India; the development of extremely novel mutli-mechanistic, antibacterial nitric oxide releasing surfaces for various biomedical applications; the development of high-content sulfur polymers through inverse vulcanisation for use in antimicrobial applications.
