As Durham County's 4-H Agent my role is to develop youth programs, clubs, special interest groups, and summer camps designed in partnership with Durham County Government and the land grant universities of North Carolina. As part of the Extension Management Team I frequently partner with other programs housed in the extension office, which include: Family and Consumer Science, Community Outreach, Agriculture and Horticulture, Small Farms, and Welcome Baby. My programs center on the 4 H's, Head, Heart, Hands, and Health and can cover a wide variety of community needs while connecting Durham's 4-H programs to regional, state, and national 4-H events. The majority of programs are implemented or lead by adult and youth volunteers, who I assist in recruiting, training, managing, and supporting throughout the year.Starting shortly before COVID-19, I've taken a lot of pride in adapting to challenging conditions under COVID. Joining Extension in October of 2019, my responsibilities as a 4-H agent generally included managing volunteers for community clubs, hiring and managing contractor services for various camps and programming, providing curriculum to community partners, and managing our county-funded 4-H budget. COVID-19 greatly impacted traditional programming. Adapting to those challenges, I partnered with fellow agents and acquired grant funding from Duke University for a Victory Garden program that provided over 200 garden kits to Durham families, over 50% of which requested financial assistance and received their kits for free. This program was later highlighted in Durham Magazine for its impact on the community. Innovations also had to be made in creating new virtual formats for programming, training instructors, filming and editing videos for marketing and instruction, and reaching new families with our remote formatting. Despite these challenges, I am proud of the adaptations we’ve made during the pandemic.

After performing several times at The Monti story-slams I had the honor of being invited to perform an original story at a curated show. This involved work-shopping with the executive producer, Jeff Polish, after my initial story pitch. This required me to fully employ my skills in narrative construction, marketing myself to an audience, and meticulously refining my performance according to Mr. Polish’s directions and feedback. Three of my storytelling performances have been filmed and uploaded, and my curated performance was nominated for Best Comedy Story of 2019, and honored at The Annual Hippo Awards at The Carolina Theater. Since then I have also served as a host or MC for the "Seven Deadly Sins" Storyslam, where I introduced storytellers and provided impromptu stories between volunteer storytellers from the crowd. I have also been personally invited to planning sessions for future Monti projects on an informal basis and look forward to continuing performing with them as COVID restrictions lift.

I have served on the School Improvement Team for three years and hold a position on the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support team. My specific role as SIT Team Project Manager has required me to devote multiple hours per month in developing quantifiable steps to improve our school’s culture and performance, distribute responsibilities for employing new strategies, and organizing, crafting, and documenting all data which indicates growth or progress in these goals using our certified software. My role as the head of the writing subcommittee means that I work closely with parents and staff to carefully craft the precise language of our Improvement Plan document. Likewise, my role on the PBIS team has also involved analyzing referral data for the areas which require the greatest improvement in terms of school culture and then crafting plans to shift school culture. I personally designed and oversaw ordering of a school currency which has continued to be widely used as an incentive to improve student behavior for the past two years, in addition to creating other behavioral incentives such as celebratory breakfasts. For my work in this area my Principal awarded me a SOAR Award at our final faculty meeting last year, recognizing my personal investment and dedication to the school.

For over five years I taught English at Jordan High School. I have taught English I: Survey of Literature, Honors English II: World Literature, Standard English IV: British Literature, and Advanced Placement Literature in addition to Foundations of English I and II, classes specialized for low-literacy students. I'm very proud of my test scores which I have annually exceeded growth in teacher-added student growth statistics, which only 8% of North Carolina teachers achieve each year. As you can see from the attached screenshot, my growth statistics fall well past the threshold for exceeded growth. Additionally, in my 4th year, I taught Advanced Placement Literature where I managed to personally raise our pass rate by 18%. In addition to my role as a teacher I also am the project manager for the School Improvement Team, where I am tasked with writing goals using Inidstar's software and documenting them with data for the district. This is my third year involved with the School Improvement Team, and I think my work there reflects my work ethic and dedication to the school, where I volunteer much of my free time. I also sit on the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support team, where I helped analyze statistics on discipline with a team to determine a set of values to shift school culture. I personally designed and ordered the school-wide currency we use as motivation for positive behavior, and routinely devote my time to quarterly breakfasts we hold for students performing positive behaviors in the school. Finally I also run the schools Gender and Sexuality Alliance, Spectrum, which serves a social club, activist group, and support group in our school. We routinely schedule out of school field-trips, march in the annual Durham pride march, schedule guest speakers, and advocate for the rights of gender and sexual minorities in the school with posters and other educational information.

Over the course of 2016-2017 one of my colleagues Matthew Miller and I created and produced a podcast series called Drive in which we interviewed participants about their passions. These included teachers, actors, rock climbers, and local artists. We then edited these interviews together to create a braided narrative exploring our subjects complex experiences of triumph and adversity in their fields. I coordinated, planned, and executed interviews and used audio editing software to produce the podcasts.

In the summer of 2016 I travelled to Greece with Benton Wise and Shannon Potter, two Duke Teach House fellows who had their trip sponsored by Duke. During the course of the trip we travelled through Athens, Delphi, Corrinth and Ithaca – visiting sites and museums relevant to The Odyssey and Illiad, as we read, analyzed, and discussed these epics. Over the course of the trip Ms. Potter and I continued to collaborate to develop and refine our lesson plans and incorporate our experiences into our relevant unit plans.

In the summer of 2015 I taught at the Duke Young Writers Camp. This work experience gave me an opportunity to work with Middle School children as they developed their skills in humor writing and dark fiction. It was an exciting opportunity to become engaged in a camp culture, to reconnect with the importance of creative writing, and to help foster growth in these incredible young talents.

I began studying and working with Duke University’s Master of Arts in Teaching program in the Summer of 2013. My time in the MAT program includes two semesters of placement for at least six hours a day in our classrooms. I was placed with Nancy Duffner in the Fall of 2013 at Northern High School teaching 11th Grade Standard English and Honors YMOP (An African-American Male Cohort) for the entire fall semester. In the spring I was placed with Amber Nile at Durham School of the Arts where I largely taught 12th Grade Advanced Placement Literature and occasionally an 11th Grade Standard/Honors inclusion English class. After my official internship I continued to volunteer my time at Durham School of the Arts in order to deepen my experience there and continue to draw on the experience of their talented staff.

In my second year attending GCSU and Pride Alliance events, Mia McMahon and I ran for President and Vice President of the student run LGBTQ+ organization on campus. We remained in that elected position until graduation, nearly tripling attendance at regular meetings, greatly increasing LGBTQ+ visibility on our rural Georgia Campus. We oversaw an annual charity drag performance that was highly attended by the student body and routinely raised several thousand dollars each year to continue funding our program. We partnered with a Georgia based nonprofit ANGEL to raise money and awareness on campus about HIV, and routinely distributed free condoms on campus through a partnership with Trojan who donated over 400 condoms for distribution at fundraising events. We lobbied for funding from the university for officers to receive Safe Space training, which we then used to train members and interested faculty. We also organized yearly trips to Atlanta, where we marched every year in the Atlanta Pride Parade.

During the spring of 2010 I worked on the S.T.E.M. Project Grant with Georgia College and State University's Theater Department. During my time on the project I was involved in multiple stages of Georgia College and State University Theater Department’s educational program with the Science Technology Engineering and Math grant. I prepared and co-wrote a performance with Iona Pendergast which we directed, produced, and performed with High School students labelled academically at risk over the course of several months. My original role was to facilitate workshops, but as I invested supplementary hours in the writing of the script, additional rehearsals, and creation of a short documentary film, I was invited by the Department Chair to present on behalf of the program at the STEM symposium later that spring.

During my time at Gwynn Valley I developed instructional activities on Fine Arts which included creative writing, journalism, dance performance, stage combat, original musicals, puppetry, technical theater, painting, and drawing. I worked with Gywnn Valley for several years initially as a Cabin Counselor after which I was asked to take on the responsibility of directing their Fine Arts program teaching children from age 5 to 12. During this time I developed curriculum on a daily basis and wrote, directed, and produced fifteen performances over the course of three years. I was particularly proud of work-shopping scripts with campers to create original productions that fully incorporated their ideas and highlighted their individual strengths during a very tight time-frame. I also managed high school interns, other counselors working under me in assisting them in developing and implementing their own educational programs and managing the budget for our program cluster.
