A recent career changer entering the world of Software Development following working as a teacher. I made this decision as I found an undiscovered passion: coding. I enjoy problem solving, learning technical skills and building projects. At present I am focused on professional development and upskilling in software development. To this end I have taken part in a 3 month Software Development Bootcamp with Northcoders, completed projects, katas, FreeCodeCamp and Harvard’s CS50 Introduction to Computer Science. VSO implements the International Citizen Service (ICS) which is a programme funded by the UK Department for International Development that gives people in different countries a unique opportunity to work together, to develop and share valuable skills, and to make a practical contributions to systemic causes of poverty. The specific project George was managing was the Youth Economic Empowerment Project (YEEP), a Livelihoods project in rural Cambodia, which aimed to eliminate poverty by systematically target three thematic areas within the local youth community: business, agriculture and carers. George also managed Community Action Days (CAD), which mobilised the whole community to address development issues effecting the community and Active Citizenship Days (ACD) which raised awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).George’s role within this project was as team leader. His main responsibilities included managing three sub teams (careers, business and agriculture) in implementing the aforementioned livelihoods project. His responsibilities included splitting and delegating workloads to the teams ensuring they met their targets and deadlines in addition to managing the sending of financial reports. George also managed the monitoring and evaluation of the project. He reported and researched if VSO had changed the community, if the project had met its intended short and long term impacts and outcomes as well as how the project could be improved. These research questions were answered using a mixed methodology approaches including: qualitative and quantitative data gathering techniques. George partially redesigned the research, lead twenty persons who gathered the data, analysed qualitative data and analysed quantitative data using SPSS. Show less

The project George specifically worked on aimed to spread awareness, cause behavioural change within local youth clubs which would ultimately affect the wider community. George met Restless Development's aforementioned development goals by leading classes, running after school health clubs, holding meetings with local communities, girls rights awareness campaigns and HIV awareness days. To equip him with knowledge and skills to achieve these aims he was given two weeks of intensive training. The project was funded and in partnership with the Department for International Development (DFID) and upon arrival George also helped provide feedback to Ecorys, the consultancy organisation evaluating ICS, to evaluate the programme for DFID. Since returning to England George has remained active with Restless Development on their Student Stop Aids Campaign, attending further Advocacy training events in the Netherlands with CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality.
