Study Physician working in late stage clinical development within the Respiratory and Immunology TA

Senior safety physician within the Immuno-Oncology sectionI participate in regular surveillance activities, providing in depth medical review of safety cases, signal detection, evaluation, and risk management. I support activities requiring in-depth product safety evaluations to respond to regulatory authority inquiries, and represent the Imfinzi lung indication at governance meetings and within cross functional teams in support of submission activities. Separate from activities within the safety organization, I am assigned as the safety physician to a number of early and late phase studies and work in cross functional clinical development teams, providing input and review of all study related documents (e.g: ICFs, study protocols, clinical study reports, safety management plans) and activities (e.g: regulatory responses, IDMC meetings, safety committee review meetings, etc..). I have served as Global Safety Physician for a bi-specific IO product, responsible for supporting a number of indication teams in moving this asset from the early to late phase program-I serve as Chair of Astra Zeneca’s Pulmonary Safety Knowledge Group (10 members representing clinical pulmonary, toxicology, radiology) providing safety evaluation/strategy advice as requested for any AZ product at any stage of the life cycle where pulmonary adverse events are a risk, or where the pulmonary clinical perspective is required

Within UNTHSC, I worked full time at the Tarrant County Public Health Department, where I served as the medical director providing oversight of clinical operations related to Tuberculosis assessment and treatment, as well as Refugee Health. This site additionally functioned as "Site 20" within the CDC's TB Clinical Trials Consortium, and I served as its Principle Investigator. Responsibilities included provision of oversight for the appropriate conduct of CDC sponsored trials at the site supervising a staff of 5, addressing administrative requests of local and State of Texas (DSHS) IRBs, CDC, FDA, and collaborating with a partner site in Barcelona, Spain. As site PI with an international partner site receiving US funding, I had ultimate accountability for this overseas site's operations around clinical trial activity and accountability and a total operating budget (for both sites) of almost one million dollars/year.

ACGME training program in adult infectious diseases. I served on a busy adult infectious diseases consult service, performing new consultations and follow-up assessments on in-patients on the service. I gained experience in the management of a wide variety of infections (skin and soft tissue, bone and joint, device-related, CNS, endocarditis, etc..) as well complex opportunistic infections in HIV, solid organ transplant, and burn unit patients, in addition to seeing infectious diseases patients in a weekly outpatient clinic. Infectious disease consultation service also comprised consultation work within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Galveston Hospital, which receives the most medically complex patients from across the State of Texas. I completed a didactic training program in tropical medicine as part of the program, and participated in a variety of research projects.

-served within the Public Health Division to provide the medical perspective in the formulation of public health policy for the Province of Ontario (pop:12 million); focus was primarily on communicable disease control (tuberculosis, vaccine preventable diseases, health care associated infections), within an extremely complex environment requiring close exchange and collaboration with other internal government ministries, 36 local public health units throughout the province, Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (now Public Health Ontario) national agency partners (Department of Defense, Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health), academic partners and international agencies (CDC, WHO). Reported directly to the Chief Medical Officer of Health for the latter two year period. Additional activities involved provision of medical input on unique public health crises (e.g: H1N1 pandemic), or on public health policy issues affecting specific populations (e.g: First Nations, Refugee health programs)

--served as faculty within the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health Sciences; focus clinical work was on the evaluation of local and nationally referred patients with sarcoidosis as well as beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBD), in addition to other occupational/environmental lung disorders. Performed complex and detailed evaluations including full pulmonary function and cardiopulmonary exercise testing, bronchoscopy with routine procurement of broncho-alveolar lavage and multiple trans-bronchial biopsy specimens; supported research activity in sarcoidosis and CBD.

Provided inpatient (ward, ED, ICU) and outpatient respiratory medicine services with two other colleagues on a rotating basis

Provided inpatient and ED consultative services, and attending services for a 7 bed ICU with 3 other colleagues on rotating basis. Evaluated pre-operative patients in weekly clinic; served as hospital's chief of specialty medicine services for a 6 month period; worked with other colleagues during a very challenging point in the hospital's history as it was slated for closure by the government. I was very involved in the problems of recruitment and retention of physicians to the ED (at a time when government policy precluded the hiring of family physicians on the Island of Montreal), the establishment of the hospital's current place within the McGill University Health Network, and the issue of ensuring timely access to cardiac catheterization services at the either of two university hospitals.

Continuation of ACGME/RCPSC program in respiratory medicine

ACGME training program in pulmonary and critical care medicine: provided consultation services under the guidance of the attending consultant pulmonologist on the wards and in the clinic to patients with a variety of respiratory disease seen in an academic referral center; I provided direct care to patients under the guidance of the attending intensivist, to a broad spectrum of patients with critical illness. I performed and supervised medical residents in a wide variety of procedures including bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, arterial line placement, Swan-Ganz catheter placement. advanced cardiac life support, among others.

36 month ACGME training program in internal medicine

Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada program in Community Medicine (currently known as Preventive Medicine and Public Health) comprising a rotating internship in family medicine (carried out at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Montreal), followed by MSc. in epidemiology and biostatistics, and additional rotations in public health units. Having developed an interest in developing more in depth clinical training as a result of working with respiratory medicine specialists during my MSc., I left the program on good terms after discussing my goals with my program director to pursue additional clinical training in the US
