About George Schiro

I’m an Enterprise Architect who has been designing and developing solutions in the area of enterprise identity management for over 20 years. As Chief Enterprise Architect at Tirion Solutions, I own development and maintenance of the single sign-on solution and core central security infrastructure that sits in front of and integrates 30+ state Medicaid applications. Tirion is the primary single sign-on contractor for 5 states.Because my enterprise architecture work puts me in direct contact with security and access control, here are some of the sobering realities of why enterprise security is vital - in particular digital certificate management.• Wildcard certificates, which handle unlimited domains, are no longer secure• On average, enterprises have 23,000 certificate keys, and 54% of IT leaders do NOT know where these keys are stored or how they are managed• 69% of employees have bypassed their cybersecurity guidance in the past year• 77% of companies have had outages in the past 24 months due to expired certificates• The average annual cost of recovering from certificate expiration is $15MWorse yet, quantum computing will allow hackers to break encryption faster, and cybersecurity hacks per company are increasing dramatically, with many of them successful. One cybersecurity answer to this problem is SSL certificates expiring more frequently, but that creates its own set of problems, risks, and costs.A single expired SSL certificate anywhere in your business warns every site visitor that your website isn’t secure, interrupting transactions and risking your reputation.Manually changing digital certificates carries the potential for mishandling, creating risk from disgruntled employees, insecure practices, or soon, computers making private keys from public ones.Digital Certificate Automation is the solution. That’s why I developed GoGetCert - a single, ‘set it and forget it’ application that:• automates certificates for every domain and server in your enterprise• eliminates certificate expiration issues that bring down your systems• provides a view-at-glance certificate status of your entire enterprise• enables password-less authentication for consumers of your cloud services• works with AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or any other cloud service provider GoGetCert is the reliable, proven solution that completely automates your digital certificate updates. Without human involvement. Without data breach threats. Without fail.Visit our website or message me to discuss your needs.

Tirion Solutions is a leading provider of single sign-on (SSO) and secure identity management for state government-managed networks. We have been administering federal Medicaid programs since 2006. Our proprietary Tirion Automated Identity ManagerⓇ solutions replace the proliferation of passwords, user IDs, authentication systems, provisioning approvals, and more. They also allow for quick adjustments as users change roles within the organization or gain/lose access to specific applications. As Chief Enterprise Architect, I lead the integration of various US state governments, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, and Gainwell Technologies web applications (Medicaid) with a SAML token based single-sign-on system (SSO) designed by Tirion. This system uses Microsoft ADFS to route security requests between the various web applications. It includes "claims-aware" web applications, older NT token based ASP applications as well as JSP / Java applications that required proprietary interfaces. This work entailed the use of public key infrastructure (PKI) technology to handle data encryption and digital signatures necessary to exchange user credentials across private LANs as well as internet connected gateways. I also spearheaded the development and implementation of reusable virtual machine templates for VMware ESX Hypervisor that reduced setup time from weeks to days for new Tirion single-sign-on installations.

Senior Web Developer

Kennedy Space Center

Served as lead architect and developer of an internal website for scheduling enrollment and issuance of US government-mandated smart card badges for all 10K NASA contractors and civil servants at Kennedy Space Center. The system included user self-scheduling of appointments with personalized email confirmations and Outlook calendar integration, a stand-alone HID reader badge swipe utility for tracking the movement of badges around the space center, an automated personalized mass email processor, DTS integration with data from Marshall Space Flight Center, and a reporting sub-system with integrated security (IWA) from the browser to the database. The successful implementation of this high visibility application resulted in a NASA Technically Significant Software Award. Johnson Space Center and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory also implemented this software. Developed a prototype implementation of NASA's eAuthentication service. This work served as a "how to" demonstration of the US government-mandated eAuthentication security architecture for Kennedy Space Center application developers. Appointed the eAuthentication Security Subject Matter Expert at Kennedy Space Center. Designed and developed several tools in C# to aid the implementation of SEI CMMI Level 3 software engineering standards. These included template driven document generators for database description and software version description. These tools allowed fellow developers to quickly and consistently generate documentation required for CMMI compliance. Redesigned the database for KSC's systems management tool to normalize data and make it available for secured enterprise access and maintenance. Designed and implemented an abstraction layer for KED to increase performance, scalability and reliability.
