High Intensity Therapist
I worked as a High Intensity CBT Therapist for TEWV NHS providing step 3 CBT interventions to primary care users across County Durham.
Trainee High Intensity Therapist
I was given the opportunity to study CBT at Newcastle University by TEWV NHS. I worked for the trust by providing step 3 CBT interventions to primary case service users across County Durham remotely and face-face at the Chester-Le-Street heath centre. As part of my traineeship I worked with a range of common mental health disorders and developed my skills working with long term health conditions. I gained proficiency in developing formulations with my patients and using advanced CBT techniques.
Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner
I worked as a qualified PWP for Talking Matters Northumberland (TMN) as part of the MHM group. During this time I worked with step 2 patients in a primary care setting contracted by the NHS, providing low intensity CBT interventions to patients across Northumberland. I completed the “low intensity IAPT supervision” course with Newcastle University in 2020 and during my time with TMN was clinical supervisor for two trainee PWPs and four qualified PWPs. I supported my trainees throughout every stage of their PGCert and both passed the course.I took a lead role in a working party, combining my computer literacy skills and knowledge of NICE approved interventions to revamp the improving wellbeing workshops, under close supervision from our step 2 lead. I delivered the newly revised 5-week improving wellbeing workshop on a weekly basis. I also played a key role in a veterans special interest group (SIG).I gathered knowledge from Prof. David Dagnan and others during an SBK conference in 2019, where I learnt to support IAPT clients with learning difficulties. I combined the content from the conference and presented it to my colleagues during a service day. I also used my pharmacological experience and medication management skills to provide in-house training for two cohorts of trainee PWPs, to support their professional development and aid the completion of their PGCert requirements. I completed an accredited MSc level course with Teesside University to evidence my proficiency in working with long term health conditions (LTHC) by adapting low intensity CBT interventions to support this demographic. I became proficient in applying the principles of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to support patients with severe or enduring LTHCs.
Trainee / Psychological Wellbeing Practitoner
Whilst completing my PGCert with the University Of Exeter, I worked at Plymouth Options as a trainee psychological wellbeing practitioner, delivering low intensity CBT interventions to a range of patients across Plymouth. I was fortunate to be part of a growing team of professionals from diverse backgrounds with knowledge and experience from different sectors.During my time at Plymouth Options, I learnt to conduct comprehensive mental health assessments. I provisionally diagnosed patients with a range of common mental health disorders suitable for step 2 interventions but also assessed patients requiring step 3 (HI-CBT) or step 4 psychotherapy interventions. I was able to utilise weekly MDT meetings and clinical / case management supervision sessions to consult with more experienced practitioners and make effective shared decisions for the patients under my care.I gained competence in delivering low intensity CBT interventions, such as: Behavioural Activation, Worry Management, Cognitive Restructuring, Exposure Therapy, Problem Solving and Sleep Hygiene in a face-face setting or via the telephone. I co-facilitated 2hr depression management courses and led the facilitation of 1hr wellbeing workshops focusing on: Depression, Anxiety, Sleep Hygiene, Assertiveness and Stress. I did not receive any negative feedback from any of my group interventions and feel that my experience in other clinical fields has enhanced my presentation skills. I also became proficient in completing computerised CBT interventions (CCBT) via the online platform Silvercloud.
Recovery Coordinator
I worked for Addaction North and East Cornwall, managing a caseload of 40-70 service users over several areas including: Callington, Saltash and Liskeard. During this time I had the opportunity to train in various fields, from child safeguarding to report writing and established myself as an experienced recovery co-ordinator. During my time at Addaction, I worked closely with a diverse range of service users through a stepped care model. I provided specialist 1-2-1 support from referral and assessment to detoxification / rehabilitation (Tier 2-4 interventions). I oversaw a significant number of successful closures with my service users over the 18 months I worked for Addaction.I worked closely with GPwSIs, pharmacists and specialist nurses to deliver pharmacological and BBV interventions for service users. Many of whom were prescribed opiate substitute medication or had severe / enduring mental health problems that required ongoing clinical case management. I enhanced my communication skills to establish sound multi-disciplinary care and continuity for my service users. I innovated, designed and delivered a structured group intervention under the “Prep 4 Change” agenda. This intervention helped numerous service users prepare for detoxification / rehabilitation and ensured long lasting positive outcomes post treatment. In addition, I co-founded / facilitated the “Affected Others” group once a fortnight, providing ongoing information, advice and support to those indirectly affected by substance misuse.
Sms Recovery Worker
I joined EDP in October 2016 having completed voluntary recovery work in the community. I wanted to see how the criminal justice system linked up with community services in terms of interventions, housing and probation. I gained further experience in completing confidentiality forms, risk assessments, clinical assessments and recovery care plans. I became familiar with completing outcome STAR assessments and experience in delivering SMART recovery meetings, SEQ groups and relapse prevention sessions. My clinical duties included working as a 2nd Signatory for the dispensary 2-3 times a week, dispensing methadone and buprenorphine to service users with substitute prescriptions. I gained experience in mandatory drug testing and had the opportunity to consolidate my learning with training in Group Skills, Advanced Group Skills, Motivational Interviewing & Best Practice. HMP Dartmoor helped me build confidence, working in a challenging environment with service users that exhibited complex behaviours. I worked with service users who had issues with novel psychoactive substances, along with individuals with severe learning difficulties. HMP Dartmoor helped me gain a greater understanding of the issues that are currently present within the prison environment and the wider community. I gained confidence in identifying risks before they develop into volatile situations and generally broadened my horizons in recovery work.
Substance Misuse Worker (Voluntary)
Originally I enrolled in Harbour's volunteer program during my 2nd year of university but unfortunately the program was shut down, so I rejoined after completing my psychology degree in Nov 2015.As a volunteer duty worker, I worked with prescription queries, harm reduction and mandatory drug testing. I completed over 100 initial / triage assessments with service users through telephone assessments and 1-2-1 sessions. I later gained competency in completing comprehensive assessments in 1-2-1 sessions, developed my professional rapport building skills and gained knowledge of tiered treatment interventions within the field. I gained experience in assessing clients with a board range of issues including: psychological trauma, abuse, bereavement, suicide, self harm and domestic violence. I co-facilitated brief intervention sessions with a colleague twice a week, for three weeks per cohort (90 minutes per session). This involved delivering contemporary evidence based intervention techniques within a group setting, providing service users with the support and materials necessary to make long lasting positive change.I helped run a needle exchange clinic and completed over 160 exchanges during my placement. I registered service user’s, disposed of used injecting equipment, provided access to clean equipment and offered harm reduction advice. Supporting service users through the needle exchange gave me insight into the world of injecting and the processes / lifestyles involved. It also made me confident in providing accurate harm reduction advice.I had the opportunity to train in NPS’s, IBA, Dual Diagnosis, Safer Injecting and Naloxone administration. I also worked with Harbour to complete a Level 3&4 NVQ in substance misuse. During this time I designed and produced a harm reduction / safe injecting leaflet for IPED users called "Minotaur's Muscle Myths". 1000 copies are in circulation, stocked in gyms, exchanges and pharmacies around Plymouth.
