About George Bass, K.C., Icd.D

Retired (and reinventing) senior legal and business executive, analytical by nature, with extensive experience in financial services (insurer) businesses, including support for strategic planning, risk management and audit committees of Wawanesa Mutual Insurance group of companies ("Wawanesa"). I also have considerable experience working based upon co-operative/mutuality principles. At Wawanesa I led a team that practiced corporate law and I developed a recognized expertise in corporate governance. As the Chief Compliance Officer and Chief Privacy Officer of Wawanesa, I developed and oversaw principles based systems and dealt with regulators including OSFI (Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions). My work also involved managing Wawanesa’s donations program, through which I enhanced my passion for philanthropy. I was one of the trustees of Wawanesa’s defined benefit pension plans. My work as such a trustee, and as corporate secretary reviewing quarterly investment reports of Wawanesa’s investment managers and hearing presentations from them, gave me a solid grounding in institutional investing. My sense of differentiation of the functions of management and a board has evolved through my employment and my service on many community boards. I currently serve on the board of The Winnipeg Foundation (and as Chair in 2024 and 2025) as well as the Public Utilities Board; previously serving on the boards of St. Boniface Hospital including as Co-Vice Chair and thus serving on all its committees; CancerCare Manitoba, as a Board, not a government appointment, including as Chair of its Finance & Audit Committee (and as a consequence also had a board seat on the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation), on its Executive Committee, and on its Nominations & Governance Committee.
