Studying supernovae is a tricky business. We can't just go out and get one of the hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy and bring it back to the laboratory for experiments. Nor can we order of few from the local scientific supply store. We are left to peer into the vastness of space through telescopes hoping to catch a supernovae in the act. Luckily however, if you have a really fast computer and capable simulation software you can study the next best thing to a real supernova --- a virtual supernova.As a computational astrophysicist and a member of the Flash Center for Computational Science at the University of Chicago. I ran large-scale simulations of type Ia supernovae on some of the world's fastest super computers. I developed algorithms and software to facilitate this effort as well as data mine the many terabytes of data produced by my simulations.
