George Janas founded Consumer Debt Counselors, a non-profit corporation, in 1998 to begin the financial education of consumers. George had spent 23 years working in the insurance industry and had seen people who were getting into trouble financially and were struggling to turn their lives around. These were good, hard-working people who were successful, but who had experienced a life-changing event--death, divorce, medical issue, job loss--that would cause an economic downturn. Initial problems would begin with debt, for which bills would be paid on time. But if someone's life took a turn for the worse financially, it could often take three to four times as long to get out of debt as it took to get into debt. After watching this occur over and again, George decided to begin a non-profit to start financial literacy programs for consumers.Today, Consumer Debt Counselors work with clients who are provided with low cost and no cost counseling sessions. Clients are every day people who are struggling with financial challenges that they do not know how to resolve without counseling: unsecured debt, mortgages that are not affordable, heavy student loan debt.Consumer Debt Counselors offers certified credit counselors and certified housing counselors who review and analyze and provide an overall assessment and understanding of credit and debt resolutions. Information is put into everyday terms so that everyone will understand what the options are. There is a staff of highly skilled advisors with resources, advice and direction to help make decisions.
