I was blessed to have the opportunity to travel the state of Florida with my band, East Coast Railway, throughout high school. We would travel to and from small venues nearly every weekend, playing music for crowds to listen to and enjoy. This unique experience helped me to sharpen and develop an abundance of skills and abilities as well as give me an alternative perspective on life and relationships. Firstly, I was able to help organize and plan events. Whether this was contacting a venue/bar or communicating with an event organizer, each show I’d play an integral role in planning. Secondly, being on stage helped strengthen my communication and public speaking skills. Often performing in front of strangers, I had to be able to entertain and communicate with people I didn’t know. It now comes quite naturally and easily. Lastly, situations often arose that required quick thinking and on the spot action while performing at bars and venues. Equipment would be faulty or misplaced, venues would change plans last minute, etc. In turn, my problem-solving skills developed mightily as well. Now I have taken the things I learned in the music industry and transferred them over to the tech world as I work as a Demand Generation Rep at Amazon Web Services. As the first point of contact for several AWS customers, I can utilize the multitude of things I learned during my band experience to help customers truly reach their goals.
