Facilitating Rehabilitation
Corrections Department
Having decided to take some time off, I engaged in various volunteer work and investigating non-profit organisations e.g. World Vision, Tear Fund, CAP NZ, etc. One such opportunity led me to be involved with developing a program that supports the Department of Corrections’ vision: To create lasting change by breaking the cycle of re-offending. The Dept. of Corrections – South Auckland - work with a number of organisations to help achieve this vision and we became one such ‘organisation’.Our program, called “Jumping Ship” addressed the attitudes and beliefs of the offenders towards offending and was developed by showing how we achieve our ‘results’ whatever they may be, from our behaviours, which are born from our beliefs and self-definition – how we see the world. To see real and lasting behavioural change, we need to challenge our belief system, whether that’s about ourselves, others or circumstances. The results of our program were overwhelmingly positive, from both the Corrections Dept. and the offenders. We very soon had requests to run the program in other Correction Centres, which we did.We believe that turning people away from crime is an investment worth making, not just from an economic point of view, but also for the good of individuals, families and communities. We ran this program for approx. 6 months, due to lack of funding, we suspended our involvement.
