The School Land Board (SLB) was established in 1939 by the 46th Legislature to manage the sale and mineral leasing of Permanent School Fund (PSF) lands. The SLB’s responsibilities include approving land sales, trades and exchanges, and the purchase of land for the PSF. In addition to this, the SLB issues permits, leases and easements for uses of state-owned submerged land. The SLB is composed of three members.The Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office serves as Chairman of the SLB and is joined by two citizen members.

In the early days of the Republic, Texas gave its Veterans land in recognition for their military service. Spurred by returning World War II Veterans, the Legislature established the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) in 1946 to continue this tradition by providing Texas Veterans with long-term, low-interest land loans.Today, the VLB oversees six programs for Veterans, Military Members and their families. The three-member governing body (Board) of the VLB is responsible for the administration of the Veterans Land Loan Program, the Veterans Housing Assistance Program, the Veterans Home Improvement Program, the Texas State Veterans Homes, the Texas State Veterans Cemeteries and the Voices of Veterans Oral History Program. The VLB also makes tracts of land available for Texas Veterans and Military Members to bid on in our quarterly Veterans Land Sale that is held every January, April, July and October. Land not sold during this Veteran Land Sale is available for public purchase during the public land sale. In 2006, Commissioner Bush applied to the U.S. Naval Reserve through the Direct Commission Officer program. He obtained his commission in June of 2007. He received two years of INDOC training at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth and qualified for the intelligence program. From October 2009 to June 2010, he supported the Navy Reserve Joint Intelligence Center U.S. Central Command (JICCENT), a joint services unit that assesses national security risk in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, at Lackland Air Force Base.In June of 2010, he was mobilized for an eight-month tour of duty at Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this time, Commissioner Bush was honored to serve under Admiral William H. McRaven at the Joint Special Operations Command.Commissioner Bush returned from Afghanistan in early 2011 and served for two years at the JICCENT at Lackland Air Force Base. In February 2013, Bush returned to the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth to provide support for the United States Southern Command before resigning his commission at the rank of Lieutenant in June 2017.Among his service decorations, Commissioner Bush was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his meritorious service. He received the Afghanistan Campaign Medal for serving in theater and earned the Intel Warfare Designator pin.
