Barrister

As a self employed barrister I represented clients in a variety of civil law hearings as well as drafting documents and providing specialist advice to my clients.

Dec 2015 - Feb 2017

Associate Solicitor/Solicitor Advocate

Cardiff, United Kingdom

I worked in the employment law department of Leo Abse and Cohen Solicitors, a well established firm in South Wales and the Southwest of England. Leo Abse and Cohen was acquired by Slater and Gordon Lawyers in May 2015. I represented my clients throughout the entire litigation process including representing the clients at the preliminary and final tribunal hearings. I undertook complex claims including claims with multiple parties. I represented clients in; unfair dismissal cases regarding conduct, redundancy capability and some other substantial reasons dismissals; discrimination due to age, race, sex, pregnancy & disability; ‘TUPE’ transfers, protective awards, unlawful deductions of wages claims (including complex cases regarding the national minimum wage and ‘sleep in/on call’ job roles), breaches of the Working Time Regulations 1998, automatically unfair dismissals for trade union membership and/or protected disclosures and applications for interim relief; breach of contract claims and wrongful dismissal. I also regularly advised clients about compromise and settlement agreements.I also represented nurses and paramedics at all stages of ‘fitness to practice’ hearings in front of the conduct and competence committees (CCC) of their respective professional bodies; the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the Health Care Professionals Council (HCPC). The hearings are often factually complex, demanding an understanding of medical procedures and policies. I represented my clients in both the employment tribunal and before the NMC and HCPC personally. I utilised my previous training as a barrister, my training as a solicitor advocate and importantly my passion for advocacy. I represented clients based in Wales, Gloucester, Bristol, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. As well as the litigation work I also delivered talks and lectures to trade union clients on a variety of employment law subjects as well as attending more social marketing events.

I appeared in over 550 matters for a number of different clients.I was a Level 3 Advocate, the highest level Advocate in the company at the time, and I represented clients in small claims hearings and landlord and tenant cases against experienced counsel. I often drafted skeleton arguments and chronologies to assist the judges at court. As an Advocate, I put all the vocational skills I learnt on the BVC into practice, such as preparing cases, researching legal precedents, liaising with instructing solicitors, negotiating with defendants and putting forward my client’s case in court.

Portsmouth, United Kingdom

As a General Advisor, my role was to interview clients, research their legal problems and advise them how to resolve their problems. The bureau deals with a wide range of legal and financial issues including benefits, housing and employment law. The job involved a lot of research into these different areas, case management, dealing with people face to face and then logging and filing the information about the client into the computer system. I also gained work at the Portsmouth County Court representing clients in district judges’ chambers who were facing possession orders for both rented accommodation and mortgaged homes.
