I practiced law for a short period after qualifying as a solicitor and in 1971 joined Brander & Cruickshank to specialize in investment management. In 1983 I participated in the management buy-out of their investment management department, establishing Aberdeen Fund Managers, now Aberdeen Asset Management PLC, as a specialist investment management company. I became Chief Executive Officer and later Chairman when the company achieved a full listing on the London Stock Exchange in 1991. Between 1983 and 1993 the funds under management increased from £50 million to £2.5 billion. I left Aberdeen Asset Management in 1993 to pursue other opportunities in investment management, and in 1994 established Asset Management Investment Company PLC as the only specialist investment company in the United Kingdom in the global asset management sector, being appointed managing director and chief investment officer following a successful fund-raising, positions which I held until the acquisition of the company in February 2011. In that capacity I served as a director of a number of companies in which AMIC was invested in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Luxembourg. In March 2012 I established Asset Management Advisers Limited as a consultancy and advisory business operating in the financial sector and primarily focused on the global asset management industry, of which company I am executive chairman. I am also non-executive chairman of Gulf Wealth Management Limited, Bray Capital Partners Limited, Broadband Cloud Solutions Limited, Ilex Investors Limited and Oryx Management Limited and a non-executive director of several other companies.
