George Saunders, MD, is the current Chair of the National Medical Association Board of Trustees. He cares for patients in long tern care facilities in Southeastern North Carolina. He holds Board Certifications in both Family and Geriatric Medicine. His special interests are care of the elderly and of those afflicted with both physical and mental illness.Dr. Saunders is a former President of the North Carolina Medical Board and a past President of the Old North State Medical Society. He was elected to the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Health Information Exchange after appointment to that Board by former Governor Beverly Purdue.He was Chair of the Area Board of Southeastern Center (Local Management Entity for Intellectual Disabilities, Substance Disorder, Developmentally Disabled services). During his time with SEC the agency was able to broker an agreement between three sets of county commissioners to purchase a much needed headquarters. He also was instrumental in the State mandated merger of SEC with its neighboring LME to form a 5 county agency. He serves as Vice-Chair of the Area Board for the newly formed entity, CoastalCare, through June 2013.
