Volunteer - Kenya, AfricaWorld Youth International Dec 2012 - Feb 2013Modbury, South Australia, AuI was involved in a building project in the community in which Apuoyo Mixed Secondary School is located. It was very isolated and rural. The Ministry of Public health had issued a general warning to the School, pushing them to erect proper kitchens and food handling areas or risk closure. The meal that the school provides is often the only meal a number of these students receive each day so closure could be horrendous for the local community.Therefore, the school community had requested assistance from World Youth International in building a new kitchen to address these needs. The project was constructed by volunteers such as myself, alongside local builders. It was also funded by World Youth International volunteers, removing the burden from local parents who would otherwise struggle to finance the project and would force closure of the school.Founded in 1988 by the late Robert Hoey, World Youth International (WYI) is one of Australia’s leading not-for- profit international development organisations and signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID). -
