Protecting our blue planet has become my passion and work. Sea Save Foundation (SSF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to identifying ocean challenges and developing creative solutions. At a young age, I was taught to respect and love nature. I could not have predicted the devastating challenges that would face the oceans over the coming decades. It seemed so vast and resilient, that we could not harm it. I was wrong.The sea generates most of the oxygen in the atmosphere, drives climate and modulate the planet's temperature. Oceans provide home for about 97% of life on earth. New technologies reveal that our oceans are spiraling toward disaster. In the past fifty years we have taken over 90% of the large fish. Over 50% of the coral reefs have disappeared and the remaining reefs are sick. A depletion of oxygen is threatening vast areas of the Pacific. Each year, hundreds of millions of tons of trash finds its way to the ocean, and the methods practiced by the fishing industry are not environmentally sound. Now for the good news: there is still a fragile ecosystem left. If we act now we can fortify what remains and given a chance nature will begin to heal itself.We all can make a difference. At SSF we educate, inspire, and drive people to action. We are using today's media to connect with people on the web and via social networking sites. Our message is that we all can create the change that is required to reverse the destructive and harmful practices currently taking place.The ocean is delicate. We cannot “manage” segments of this ocean and expect a healthy outcome. We cannot think locally because our oceans do not know political boundaries. Tomorrow's children will look back at us and wonder why we did not do something to insure that they too could experience the beauty of whales, dolphin and other ocean creatures in something other than book or web pages. Our future is integrally linked to how we treat our animals and oceans today.
